If you want to spend your dream vacations in Budapest, you have to plan very carefully every activity you want to do in the beautiful European capital. Budapest is a city full of places to visit as well as the most exquisite cuisine, which is why, having a clear vacation plan is very important for the total enjoyment of our holiday break.

The first thing to do is to decide how long we are going to stay, which is very important to determine our budget for accommodation in Budapest.

Once you have decided this, you are ready to start planning all the great activities that the city has to offer and enjoy your vacations in Budapest to its very best.

Traditional food in Budapest

There are two delicious dishes we simply have to try, when we are on vacation in Budapest. The first is the famous Gulyas leves, and the second is Lecso.

The first of these dishes consists of a kind of soup, in which the main ingredient is meat. Therefore, this dish is mainly a beef stew that is normally accompanied by flour products, such as bread or spaghetti.

Lecso, on the other hand, contains a mixture of vegetables and sausages. It consists of red pepper, onion and sausages. Sometimes, some pieces of zucchini are added to it. It is recommended to drink some wine with Lecso and there won’t be a better one than Puztamérgesi.

Best places to visit in Budapest

The best places to visit when we are on vacation in Budapest are mainly Heroes´ Square (Hősök tere) and the Royal Palace in Buda Castle.

The Hősök tere is a wonderful square, which is located opposite the city park. This is a very important attraction due to a social and historical context. It is adorned with multiple statues of extraordinary beauty, which are distributed all around the square.

The Royal Palace is a Gothic construction that serves as a reference point for those who are interested in visiting some of the best museums of the city of Budapest. You can get to the palace by cable car, as it is 48 feet above Danube’s level.

Finally, you should always keep in mind, before visiting any place in town, to take good care of your belongings, this way you’ll ensure an excellent holiday in Budapest .

Forget the must-do-see-eat lists, sometimes stepping off of the tourist trail for a day can be fun and useful to understand a new culture. Budapest for example is a fascinating city with many hidden sides to discover. Let´s talk about the options, and “Alternative Budapest walking tour” is one. It was created to show visitors unusual sights, trends and sounds, tours are about what´s happening in these days bringing together aspects of the underground music and art scenes and takes you through districts that most visitors ignore. It´s a chance to learn about a specific culture, architecture, politics and of course the people that make Budapest a unique place.

Tours are always composed by small groups, this is necessary to enable to come into personal contact with the environment. So, if you´re visiting Budapest remember that “The Alternative Budapest Walking Tour” begins at Deák Tér, in front of the church. Booking is not necessary, just show up at the meeting point. Another alternative is ”Budapest Beyond Sightseeing”, basically a ’socio-cultural’ walking tour in the 8th district in Budapest. In the past it was considered dangerous and strongly advised to avoid. Although the 8th district is continuously developing, the changes remained unnoticed, and these tours have the purpose to stop this bad reputation.

You can choose different kinds of tours, for example the 3 hours “socio cultural walkig tour” where you will feel the real contrasts of the city going into the hidden backyards. and visiting the home of a gipsy musician family. Meeting point: outside the Hungarian National Museum. Another option is The Secret Budapest Downtown, 2 hours around the streets of the old Pest discovering the ancient city wall from the middle ages, a palace of Miklós Ybl, the greatest Hungarian architect, and again across passageway houses and the secret short cuts of the city. But also Váci Street, the most fashionable main street of Budapest presented from another, original point of view. Meeting point: Egyetem tér. The 8th district and Hungarian contemporary art, a connection that most of people don´t know. Another tour is just about this and the contrast between crumbling buildings tumble down sculptures and a growing art community. The tour we´ll show you the artistic trends in the 8th district through home-galleries, ateliers, cellar-galleries, photo exhibitions.

Meeting point: Mikszáth square, next to the Mikszáth statue. So, Art, history and games, and active participation, his is the recipe for “Budapest Beyond Sightseeing”. One more suggestion for your Budapest alternative tour: the Pálvölgy Cave. Just underneath the Buda Hills you will find the third longest cave in the country. Stalactites, rigid corridors, and spherical formations, if you love nature, this is the right place for you, and the 500 meters route will show you a very different glimpse of the Buda Hills. If you´re looking for some challenge and adventure you can choose the option to climb and hike along a 20 km long trail, it will take about 2-3 hours to complete. Now just enjoy the alternative Budapest.

If you need to find great places to stay in Budapest we suggest you to check in the old Buda, the heart of this fantastic city.

One place where vegetarians are certain not to run into problems is Budapest. This city can easily meet even vegan requirements, so you won’t have to worry about where to eat after long walks in the Hungarian capital. Vegetarian restaurants are very successful and very busy. In fact, it is not uncommon to see them filled to the brim.

This way of eating is more widespread than in Spain, since the Mediterranean diet while fairly healthy offers things that prove hard to resist for locals, such as the Iberian ham or choricito de leña.

Hummus Bar

If you want to tour the city on the Danube by visiting the best places to eat, you’re pretty much obligated to check out the Hummus Bar. As its name suggests, you can get great hummus, falafel, and all kinds of vegetables. The food has an Middle Eastern flavor and influence.

Nepfenyes Etterem

The next stop on our gastronomic tour is Etterem Nepfenyes. Although it’s a little further from the center of the city, their vegetarian pizzas, among other dishes, and excellent desserts make it worth the effort.

Gorilla Vega Bufe

To continue with our special focus, there’s also the Gorilla Vega Bufe, which is located in the center of the city. Make sure you’ve worked up a good appetite when you go there, because the dishes served here are delicious, especially the burgers, and also quite big. They alone make it worth finding. These aren’t your standard burger fare, but rather vegetarian ones that are really good. You’ll find them made of tofu in their alternative menu. They also offer a variety of salads and organic drinks as well as delicious desserts.

Ganga Vega Café

If you’re more interested in seeing the city than spending time in restaurants, there is always the option of going to a fast-food restaurant such as Ganga Vega Café. They give you a choice between food of European origin or something from farther East. They also use seasonal products obtained directly from farmers. And although fast-food restaurants are not known for great service, here you will find just that.

Govinda

Vegetarian food is closely linked to Asian cuisine and Indian food, and this restaurant, Govinda, which recently opened in Budapest, continues the traditions of other countries by offering this type of food. It’s located within walking distance of the Danube, but is not your typical tourist place.

These may be lesser known restaurants in the city, yet they offer something for everyone. And you usually get a pretty good amount of food at a good price.

Taking a break to eat at any one of these restaurants will help you rest up and get energized to see the rest of Buda and Pest. This fascinating city should be on everyone’s list to visit at least once, and perhaps even twice. This gastronomic tour gives you a good excuse to go and discover the city on the Danube for yourself.

If you’re looking for a great cultural experience this spring, head to Budapest for the annual Spring Festival. As warm breezes start to flow through the city, the population pulls together for a celebration of the best in classical, jazz, opera and folk music. Venues throughout the city welcome outstanding performers from within Hungary as well as from the international music scene.

A Little History of the Budapest Spring Festival

The Budapest Spring Festival tradition was created in 1981 by the Hungarian State Tourist Office. Concerned over the hotels that frequently sat empty until Easter, the Tourist Office came up with the idea of hosting a Spring Festival early in the year, before the rest of the European festivals began.

The festival is dedicated to the arts, and it truly has become a celebration of performing art in all its forms. Guests of all ages find events to enjoy, from folk and sport exhibitions, to opera and ballet, from theater and open-air events to classical music performances.

Throughout its history, the festival has been a colorful, exciting celebration. From its early motto “10 days, 100 locations, 1000 events” to its modern motto “the Festival is the festival of festivals,” the program represents art in all its forms, and is a beautiful showcase of ensembles and artists from at home and abroad.

The Program

The 2013 Festival kicks off on March 22nd, and stretches all the way until April 7th. Guests will have over 200 events to enjoy in 11 venues throughout the city. By location, a few key events include:

Belvárosi Szent Mihály Templom

The downtown St. Michael’s Church will be hosting the Zugló Philharmonia – King Stephen Symphony Orchestra with conductor Záborszky Kalman and vocalists Catherine Vamosi, Esther Balogh, Eugene Dean, Robert Rezsnyák. They will be performing some of Haydn’s most prominent works on the evening of March 26th.

St. Michael’s will also be hosting a performance by the Gypsy Ensemble. This versatile ensemble will be performing a range of works including classical, operetta and popular folk music.

Avilai Nagy Szent Teréz-templom

Balazs Szabo will be performing a free organ concert at the St. Teresa of Avila Church on March 23rd. This award-winning graduate of Würzburg Music Academy will be performing some challenging organ pieces by Bach.

The Saint Ephraim Choral will also be performing here, in celebration of Rachmaninov’s 140th birth anniversary. This free concert will be offered on Easter Monday.

Budapest Music Center

Celebrated violinist Xiao Wang will be performing here, accompanied by Mary Kovalszki on the piano. Wang has been playing the violin since age five, and has gone on to win numerous awards for his skill.

The Kodaly Quartet will also be performing at the Budapest Music Center. The four performers bring their colorful, romantic style to the works of Brahms and Dohnanyi. The quartet includes celebrated vocalist Judith Nemeth, Peter Velvet on viola, and Paul Banda on cello.

Also of note, the Benyounes Quartet will be performing pieces by Beethoven, Debussy and Janáček on the evening of April 5th.

These, of course, are just a few key events and places; however, the program is extensive and not one to miss. Visit the website of the Budapest Spring Festival for the full list of events and places.

Everyone should start the day with a hearty and delicious breakfast, however not everyone have the time and inspiration to cook in the morning. In this case, a typical Hungarian breakfast is the answer. Grab some fresh bread and meat, chop some vegetables, make toast and put creamy things on it. It is all up to you. You’ll see how Budapest is even more beautiful when you enjoy it in the morning with a full stomach.

Májkrém (which literally mean cream liver) goes very well with both, fresh bread and toast. Spicy cream is one of the most common ingredients of the Hungarian sandwich, which is a very popular snack in Budapest.

It is important to note that májkrém is not the same as the famous and expensive Hungarian libamáj (goose liver), which is also an exquisite culinary adventure.

Salami is one of the most famous dishes in Hungary. It is normally produced with spices, smoked and cured. It has a very unique flavor.

Cold meat is also very popular when you want to eat something quick and simple. It can be boiled, fresh, dried or smoked. You can eat it in sandwiches or as a side dish.

You can also have Túró for breakfast (Hungarian quark or cottage cheese), which is a very important ingredient for sandwiches and salads, but it can also be used for making cheesecake or pancakes. There is a kind of special Túró with chopped onion, peppers, tomatoes and paprika called kőrözött.

If you find some eggplants in your kitchen, you can easily make an eggplant cream. Just roast the eggplant, and boil the soft parts.

There is also Greavel cream in Hungary. Greavel is basically animal fat that they eat very often with breakfast, but sometimes, when they get tired of chewing, they make salty cream gravel. After eating that it is advisable to do some jogging.

Hurka is a special type of boiled sausage. There are two types: one made of liver, rice (Majas hurka) and another made with cooked blood, dry rice, salt, pepper and spices (Veres hurka).

However, the most popular breakfast in Budapest is the villásreggeli (literally breakfast with fork), it contains scrambled eggs and omelets, which are very popular as the first meal of the day. Villásreggeli is mainly served with some spices, as Hungarian paprika, as well as vegetables including onions.

Another food that many Hungarians love eating in their sandwiches is the cow tongue. The good thing is that it doesn’t look like a tongue at all after cutting, seasoning and cooking it.

Disznósajt (brawn) is made with gelatin, slices of meat of different origins, spices and other things we do not want to know.

Or you can make deviled eggs in just 10 minutes, sprinkle with paprika and serve with toasted bread, sliced onion, mustard and, in case you have, a slice of fried chicken breast from the previous day.

The crepes are also a good option if you want to start the day with something sweet. But have in mind that Hungarians make very thin pancakes stuffed with a thick Hungarian jam and dark chocolate sauce and are served rolled.

If I ask you to think of a famous nude painting, you will more than likely imagine a painting of a woman who is nude or nearly nude. Maybe Sandro Botticelli’s masterful “The Birth of Venus”, a full-figured body by Rubens or even Picasso’s “Les Demoiselles d’Avignon” come to mind. This makes sense because throughout the history of art the female body has been portrayed more often than the male body in the nude format. The latest exhibition at the Ludwig Museum of Contemporary Art in Budapest, however, is focusing on the exact opposite, the male nude.

Before Playboy or nude photographs, there existed many titillating images of women barely dressed or completely undressed and these hung in the homes of the wealthiest patrons in plain view. These were acceptable for display in their salons and studies because of their mythological or religious subject matter. Mythological figures include Danae who is showered with gold coins or Venus who is often depicted brushing her hair or looking in the mirror. Religious figures include Bathsheba bathing or Susanna being spied upon by the elders. These women are depicted in a voyeuristic way, as they seem unaware of being watched. The female nude later became a subject matter in its own right that artists tried faithfully to capture on canvas and in stone or bronze. These works usually have what is termed a “male gaze”.

In classical antiquity the male body was a subject matter that was thoroughly explored. Later, however, the male body was mostly out of sight, usually hidden in full clothing or even armor, with the exception of a few mythological images or Christian martyrs.

This fascinating exhibition is going to explore the reasons for this change, including how the role of men adapted and other sociological reasons, by examining the works of art that depict the male body. It will look at how male artists depict their own bodies and what this reflects. And it will examine how women artists depict the male nude (the “female gaze”), something which has only been possible in more recent times since women artists were often barred from access to nude models in the past.

Beginning about 1900 in turn-of-the-century Vienna, the exhibition then continues through the 20th and 21st centuries examining the way the artists own identities and their relationship to the model changed. Eventually, the male nude also gains footing as an erotic image and one that can be viewed with a “gaze of desire”.

Works by artists such as Egon Schiele, Lovis Corinth, Erich Heckel, Robert Mapplethorpe, Oskar Kokoschka, Louise Bourgeois, Eduard Munch, David Hockney, Andy Warhol, and Gilbert & George will be included in the exhibition.

“The Naked Man” exhibition is possible in cooperation with the LENTOS Kunstmuseum Linz, who hosted an exhibition prior to this one. The Ludwig Museum of Budapest’s exhibition will incorporate more works by Central and Eastern European artists. It can be seen until June 30.

The Ludwig Museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 am until 6 pm. It is located at Komor Marcell u. 1 and can be reached by metro and bus (see the website for more details).

Every time we go abroad we fall into undesirable situations, the less we know a country and the more different it is from ours, the more mistakes we make. Catching the wrong line of the metro, going to bad restaurants, buying overpriced souvenirs and getting robbed while resting on the beach are some examples of what can go wrong in our holidays.

That is why you have to be alert all time and try to skip the dangerous situations you might run into. Let’s see what are the three most important situations that we should avoid while spending our vacations in Budapest, because we´re travelers, not tourists!

1. Lets start with the minor:

Avoiding touristy restaurants

In the historical center Vaci utca, which is a pedestrian area full of shops, bars and restaurants, you’ll see that everything is very convenient for tourists: English menus, people trying to convince you eat in their restaurants, expensive souvenirs, etc. There is no need to analyze so much to realize that locals never go to these restaurants. The Good, and most importantly, authentic restaurants are the ones where you’ll pay the half of the price you could be charged at Vaci utca, where the menus are in Hungarian and there is nobody pushing you to come in.

2. Okay, we have already overcome the touristy restaurants. Now we need to sharpen our senses a bit more:

Avoid unofficial taxis

The golden rule to avoid being charged more than the official rates is not to take any taxi on the street, and instead of that calling an official taxi company. The official companies are easy to differentiate, because the license plate is yellow (any other car will have a white plate). If you get in a taxi and you see that it is not equipped with a machine to issue an invoice, a meter and the taxi driver identification number, you better get off as soon as possible, otherwise you’ll end up paying a lot of money.

Here are a few official taxi companies’ phones numbers:

6×6 Taxi: 2-666-666

Barát Taxi: (20) (30) (70) 5-200-200

Buda Taxi: 2-333-333

Budapest Taxi: 4-333-333

City Taxi: 2-111-111

It is a good idea to call the same company every time you need to use this service, because in the end you’ll be a known client. Normally, for long runs (unless you go out of town) you won’t be charged more than 3000-3500 HUF (11-13 Euros), and short runs between 2000-2500 HUF (7-10 Euros)

3. Finally, our third tip to avoid getting fooled:

Stay away from beautiful women

We haven’t gone mad, but you have to be careful when you are approached by an attractive woman with no apparent reason, this practice is quite popular in Budapest and it always ends badly: she may rob you or makes you getting into trouble.

Any of these situations can totally spoil your trip, or make pay a lot more than you expected. So we hope this article was helpful.

Maria Climent

Life in Budapest is actually not that expensive, so we wouldn’t like that you would end up paying more you are supposed to. Remember that you can find cheap apartments in Budapest on our website. / / / Find cheap apartments in Budapest

Hungary, Budapest, Gőzölgő Festival, food, music, concerts, Erzsébet Square, cocktails, wines, Akvarium Klub, Hungarian cuisine, Pálinka, Kürtőskalács, mulled wine,

It is a constant in the Hungarian capital: its taste for festivals and cultural events. If spring brings together all lovers of music and the arts, in winter the city prepares for the Gőzölgő Festival, focusing on local cuisine and of course music.

While warming spirit with the sounds of bandscoming from all corners of the country or in neighboring Germany, you can taste the Hungarian delicacies and above all and especially, their spirits and wines. Best of all: access to the concerts are free.

Where?

The Gőzölgő Festival is celebrated in the Erzsébet Square (Erzsébet tér in case you have to find the place in the guide), named on behalf of Empress Elisabeth “Sissi”, Erzebet in Hungarian, and presided over by a beautiful fountain symbolizing the four rivers of Hungary. The square is in the 5th street, on the Pest side.

The Gőzölgő Festival is held during the last weekend of February. In 2013 will be from the 23 to the 26. The stalls are open from noon to 10 pm. In addition there are special exhibitions of experts cocktail makers, wines and hot drinks, typically between 4 and 6 pm. These tastings prepare the body for concerts at nightfall.

Who organizes it?

The Gőzölgő Budapest Festival is organized by Akvarium Klub, located in the Plaza Erzesébet, so do not miss it. The Akvarium is not a simple nightclub as it is a true cultural space with live concerts, dance classes and cultural programs that change weekly.

Located in a charming building, it t is one of those essential places of Budapest´s nightlife.

Hungarian Gastronomy

Of course, you have to enjoy live concerts and live ¡the evening, but the traveler can not miss good food and local wine´s tasting . You can try it and buy it to take it home. Write down the following names to not miss the best of this exquisite cuisine:

Pálinka. It is a spirituous liquor (with medicinal properties) made with native fruits and present in the Hungarian wineries from the late fifteenth century. Apricot can be (Barack), plum (Szilva), cherry (Cseresznye), pear (Korte) and specialties.
Kürtőskalács. It is a spiral-shaped cake originally from Transylvania. It takes a special oven to bake, so it´s a professional confectionery and is very difficult to do in a home. It is made with sugar, oil, flour and dried fruit.
Mulled wine. A classic of the area mixed with tea, coffee, fruit juices. It is also common to find flavored with cinnamon or ginger. If you like strong drinks, then you have to mix it with Pálinka.

And finally, remember that more than 100 varieties of coffee, tea, tea, sweets, wines, spirits and local delicacies come together in this winter festival.

Candela Vizcaíno

With this plan, you will go to your apartment in Budapest to go to bed and rest until the next day.

There is nothing better than wander through the streets of Budapest with your loved one. For centuries the Danube River has been a source of inspiration for writers, filmmakers and theater producers. Buda and Pest are separated by the blue Danube, which is actually the longest river in Europe that spreads across up to 10 countries. Let’s follow this fantastic water source at the known as the Pearl of the Danube. Budapest awaits.

Chain Bridge

Let’s start our tour at the magical Chain Bridge. On one side you’ll find the Sisi Bridge and on the other side, the Franz Joseph Bridge. From there you will have an overview of the two sides of Budapest, which is the perfect place to start exploring the city.

Breakfast at Cafe New York

If you need to charge your batteries before this tour, you want to have breakfast at Café New York. Although it isn’t very cheap, it´s worth going there just to see its architecture. This building will make you feel like being part of a movie from the 30s in New York. It seems like an ancient palace. The waiters are elegantly dressed to serve the most selected clientele of the cafe. There you can also find some tourists, which you’ll recognize by how they are dressed. I must say that although this is a luxury place, there is no dress code required.

Erzsébet Park

To continue our tour we’ll head to Pest to enjoy a relaxing walk in the Erzsébet Park. There you’ll find many padlocks hanged by young lovers and honeymooners inspired by Federico Moccia´s novel “Want you”. It its possible to buy these padlocks in many places throughout the city, you only have to write your names on one of them, close it and keep the key forever.

The Szechenyi thermal baths

It is impossible to come to Budapest and not going to Szechenyi thermal baths. This is a very romantic and very pleasant plan to do with your loved one. There are hot and cold pools, steam rooms, saunas … and there you can even play chess on floating tables in the water. Chess players create great excitement among the locals, since Chess is considered as a very important sport in Budapest. Szechenyi thermal baths offer a very relaxed getaway, while renewing your energy.

A romantic dinner at Flamingo restaurant

One of the best things of a romantic day is to go for dinner. Well, in the Erzsébetváros area, Dob street 55, you will find a very nice restaurant called Flamingo. The best thing of this restaurant is its terrace, which is cozy and full of flowers. There you’ll enjoy a great evening with live music (usually a pianist) and the best Hungarian cuisine as well as international dish. Don’t forget to try the Hungarian wine, which will make the whole dinner even more special.

Have a drink on an evening cruise on the Danube

But our evening doesn’t have to end with dinner. Once you have eaten you can go ahead and enjoy a nice cruise on the Danube with friends. Some cruises even include dinner. Navigating the river and seeing the whole city lit is a second to none experience. From there you can make some pictures to remember with the best views of the city.

Gastronomy in Budapest and in Hungary in general is abundant in spices, the most famous of which is paprika, which is used in many of this country´s typical dishes. In Hungarian cuisine, the most famous dish is goulash, whose ancient origin comes from the rural classes. The dish is made out different meats, vegetables, legumes and, of course, paprika, the national spice. It´s a comforting meal if it´s cold outside, since temperatures in Budapest can be quite low during the winter months, which makes it no surprise that abundant meals predominate most of the Hungarian recipe books.

Also, Hungary has a wide range of wines, beers and regional spirits of the highest quality.

Budapest has nothing to envy about the other great European capitals, famous for having the best cuisine in the world, since this city is currently experimenting a revolution when it comes to cuisine. Even Michelin stars have arrived in the city, the biggest award and honour for any restaurant.

Here´s a list of some of the most famous and typical restaurants in Budapest, so that you can enjoy its wide gastronomical range with different traditional atmospheres and music:

Alabárdos: Located inside the castle and surrounded by 15th-century buildings, this restaurant has a long tradition that enables you to sample classic Hungarian dishes with a modern twist. (Országház utca 2 H – Buda 1014)

Tigris: One of the most popular in the city, this bistrot offers more informal atmosphere and serves typical Hungarian dishes and wines elaborated with a lot of care. (Mérleg utca 10 H – Pest 1051).

Vár: a Speiz: Also located close to the castle, this restaurant offers an excellent menu made up of rustic yet delicious Hungarian dishes. The meaning of this name, for the curious ones out there, is ´the Castle´s pantry´. (Hess András tér 6 H – Buda 1014).

Pierrot: If you´re looking for something more elegant, this is the right place. Located inside a historical house, it has an excellent menu with traditional Hungarian recipes and live piano sessions entertain the guests.(Fortuna utca 14 H – Buda 1014).

Gundel: This restaurant with an excellent atmosphere is located in a villa inside a park in Budapest. As well as its speciality in Gundel-style crêpes, there´s a wide range of typical Hungarian dishes. And that´s not all, since you can also enjoy a live gypsy orchestra in its large column room. (Állatkerti utca 2 H – Pest 1146).

And so, if you´re in Budapest, don´t miss out on visiting some of these restaurants where you´ll enjoy an authentic tasting experience, a pleasure for your senses in the new capital of gastronomy, where Michelin stars, tradition and modernity come together to offer you the best dishes and atmospheres in this country.
