If anything distinguishesBudapestfrom other European capitals, it is the traditional food one can find in every restaurant of the city. This pride in tradition is reflected in their cuisine that is based in the social life and the culture of the Bulgarian peasant and revolves around a table filled with well-prepared food.

So do not despair if the dishes are plentiful, think of it simply as hospitality and prepare yourselves to enjoy it. We do, however, recommend that you arrive with an empty stomach and that you have antacids at hand if your stomach is sensitive.

Goulash is the most popular specialty among tourists toBudapest. Known around the world, visitors to the city want to taste the true flavor of this soup that has the consistency of a stew.

A great place to try a goulash with an intense flavor of paprika is the Kehli restaurant, which is considered one of the best places to experience the essence of Hungarian culture inBudapest. It is located at Mokus utca 22, behind a historic, attractive façade. Gypsy music and good local wines are offered every night. It is run by its owners.

The restaurant Nancsi Neni is a true gem and a good place to eat goulash. It is located in the Valley de Huvös, at Ordogarok ut 80. Here they try to give visitors a taste of the authentic flavors of goulash, making eating this dish there a pleasure that will long be remembered. This restaurant uses special ingredients – meat, vegetables, and paprika – to prepare a dish of the highest quality and a long history. If you go with kids, they will also take special care of them.

The Kisbuda Gyöngye restaurant, located at Kenyeres utca 34, has a goulash with the aroma of traditional foods but the taste of modern cuisine.

Karolyn, an elegant and little known restaurant among tourists, is located in the palace of the same name which is now the Petofi Museum of Literature, near theSisiBridge. There menu contains only traditional Hungarian dishes, among them a goulash you won’t want to miss.

In Kádar Etterem you’ll have a wonderful experience trying the goulash, which is made from meats and products of the countryside to reproduce the homemade taste. The interior is interestingly decorated with photos of Hungarians from the 70s and 80s. Located at Klauzár tér 9, their staff speaks English. They are very strict about closing times but have prices that are very reasonable.

The truth is that goulash can be found on almost all the menus inBudapest. It is more than just a dish, it’s a tradition that nobody wants to miss.

It’s spring in Budapest, that city on the shores of the great river Danube that formed itself from two different enclaves, Buda and Pest. Now is the time of Downtown Filmweekend Budapest, Belvárosi Filmvíkend in Hungarian, so if you’re lucky enough to be in the city, you can come and see it and find all the information on here. Let’s start at the beginning so we don’t get lost. In the first few weeks of spring, in mid-April, the Hungarian capital turns into a true cultural festival in an eclectic manner. For twenty days approximately, classical music concerts, dance shows, international meetings, art exhibitions, activities for children, routes around green spaces in the city and a very long etcetera, take place in Budapest. All of this is what the Spring Festival in Budapest encompasses, a festival that’s been greatly received by locals and foreigners and which has managed to inspire other initiatives (much more modest) but of a similar kind. Along these lines we can place the Classic Film Festival, which also takes place in spring and that lasts three days. This year it begins on the 24th of May.

The Film Weekend in Budapest takes place in its entirety at Freedom Square (Szabadság tér in Hungarian) and it’s completely free, a relief in these times of economic crisis. The square is shadowed by a huge obelisk, the only remaining print of the Soviet era in the city that has been preserved because it’s a symbol of gratitude to the Red Army for the role they played in freeing the city from the Nazis. Carpeted with grass, it’s flanked by buildings that are taken by the state TV on one side and by the Hungarian National Bank on the other. This square is more of a park than anything else, one of the nicest in the capital. Well, here is where, in the open air and when the sun sets, during a whole weekend this classic film festival will take place, the programme of which for 2012 is yet to be decided. If you want more details, here’s their Facebook page, opened by the organizers, where they will give updates for the different films that will be screened, usually in original version with subtitles: https://www.facebook.com/filmweekend

Despite of the lack of information today (I’ve written this a few weeks in advance), I’ve already ‘liked’ it on Facebook. Why? Because it’s a festival where they screen the biggest film classics in film history, and that’s always a welcome thing. And also, it’s free! There’s no bad side to it. The cinematograph was born in the late 19th century as an engineering invention and not as a tool to create art. However, the human being needs to express himself in any way possible and with a little bit from here and a little bit from there he managed to record something that was in his mind. Whether it’s war films, love films, auteur films, comedy films or drama films, the classic film label is a guarantee for spiritual enjoyment through art.

Candela Vizcaíno

It’s easy to find apartments in Budapest that are available to rent for short stays and also at an excellent price. And with that, the trip will be complete, with free films and cheap accommodation.

During four days, from the 17th until the 20th of May, the famous and colorful Cirque du Soleil will stop in the Hungarian capital, Budapest. This is a unique opportunity to enjoy the show “Joy”, which has been on tour since 1994.

Cirque du Soleil

Without resorting to animal torture, without humiliating wild creatures with whips and submissions, the Cirque du Soleil’s new show symbolizes contemporary street circus. Created by a Canadian “fire-eater”, their stagings are based equally on acrobatics with amazing body management (halfway between gymnastics and dance) of its participants and traditional performing arts. Here they lay hold of theater, music, choreography, the combination of light and shadow, a unique wardrobe and a powerful narrative to leave the audience literally with their mouths wide open.

They are on tour constantly. Its more than 4000 members do not stop with this constant coming and going all over the world, either acting under a tent or safely in any arena or stadium. “Dralion”, “Corteo”, “TOTEM”, “Zumanity” are the names of the various shows that, without respite, travel the world and are represented every night somewhere like the venue in of Las Vegas.

“Joy”

And a new performance of “Joy” come to Europe. A symbolic tale about the clash between the old and finalized corrupt order and a new bright and piercing one is to be held at the Budapest Sports Arena Stadium. Trapeze artists, jugglers, contortionists, clowns, singers just , as if an opera was involved, viewers are introduced in this spectacular allegorical drama which plays with significant potential opponents.

The Fleur, The Singer in White, The Black Singer, The Bronx (young soldiers willing to overthrow the tyrant), Los Angeles, Tamir and small Tamir are the characters of this particular show that makes a call to freedom and ironically adds elements of street performance to any kind of totalitarian regime.

The Cirque du Soleil usually has several titles in the lineup and is constantly on international tour. This time , “Joy”, takes its delight to children and adults since 1994 when it was created to mark the tenth anniversary of the company.

Budapest Sports Arena

Visible from the miles away, the like flying saucer silhouette that has come from outer space can be identified as the Budapest Sports Stadium, which hosts sporting events and cultural performances of all kinds. From its 10,000 seats you can enjoy a game of ice hockey or a concert of classical music, but also this colorful show (based on the lights and shadows of the human soul) of the Cirque du Soleil

There will be four days in a row of function and tickets can be purchased via onlineat http://en.budapestarena.hu/html/kovetkezo_esemenyek.html where you can also find more information

Vibrant in spring with its large and diverse festivals, the capital of Hungary is an ideal destination for family to go with children. So it is good to reserve apartments in Budapest for short term rental. Some are very cheap and comfortable.

The Modern Hungarian paintings of Lajos Tihanyi reached its highest point at the beginnings of the early twentieth century, although he became deaf at the age of eleven years due to meningitis and barely had in the traditional sense a normal education .

Composed of bright colors, the works he did in Hungary, were mainly landscapes, nudes, portraits and still lifes, using visual lessons of Cezanne, Matisse and Picasso. After the Soviet Republic of 1919, he left the country and spent some time in Vienna and Berlin before settling in Paris. Contemporary writers, artists and politicians who he came to know during his emigration were subjected to a series of graphic works. Meanwhile, his paintings moved further away from the principles of realistic painting and his images show an enhancement in structure, representations and misrepresentations of his intense palette of expressionism.

Although in 1933, when he joined the group of abstract creation in Paris, he was far ahead in works done in this style, his untimely death in June 1938 prevented the full deployment of this period. Thanks to photographer friends, Brassaï ,André Kertész, and the painter Jacques de la Frégonniere, most of his works have survived and were returned to Hungary in 1970.

The last exhibition of his work was held in 1973 in the Hungarian National Gallery. This new exhibition has selected works from museums and private collections as well as foreign and Hungarian ones, promising a rediscovery of one of the best Hungarian painters.
Tihanyi was a painter and graphic artist who achieved international success as a Hungarian working abroad. He was part of the influential avant-garde group called The Eight, founded in 1909 in Budapest. After the fall of the Democratic Republic of Hungary in 1919, Tihanyi left the country. He connected with many writers and artists in Berlin such as the Hungarian Gyorgy Bölöni and later photographer George Brassai. In 1924 he moved to Paris where he stayed and became part of Hungarian art circles. His works are exhibited in the Hungarian National Gallery and the Brooklyn Museum of Art, among others.

Lajos Tihanyi was born in Budapest in 1885. He studied drawing at the School of Industrial Art and design, but Hungary did not have an academy of art. Márk Femés Vedres and Vilmos Beck

Tihanyi began working in Budapest, where Post-Impressionists helped introduce concepts and techniques of Cubism and Expressionism in art circles. At the age of 24 years was part of The Eight, The Eight was formed by painters Róbert Berény, Dezső Czigány, Béla Czóbel, Károly Kernstok, Ödön Marffy, Dezső Orbán and Bertalan Pór. The sculptors and Vilmos Femés Márk Vedres Beck were also associated with them.

He painted portraits of many of his friends, as Bölöni (1912), Jacques de la Fregonnière (1928). He became a world-renowned artist, with much of his best work in museums outside Hungary. Visit the official website of the exhibition in http://kogart.hu/kogart/en/nextexhibition_content.jsp?id=75

Finding the secrets to excite your partner is more than an adventure. It’s about the tastes and types of stimulation that excite us, finding out what we like best as well as what are partners like, that results in both curiosity and a number of experiments. When referring to stimulation, this could be something far from merely sexual or simply that we educate ourselves about precisely what is sexually stimulating. The media generally sells something too corporate and too artificial to be truly erotic. Tight, short dresses, high heels, uncovered skin, tight paints for men, shirts that reveal lots of skin and modern hair cuts all predispose us to think that sexy or erotic is a perfect combination of clothing, measurements and style. However, what is erotic and stimulating doesn’t have any particular characteristics. And if we are exploring the world of sexuality and stimulation, we are in for a surprise.

Without a doubt, Budapest is one of the sexiest cities in the world. The Hungarian women are famous for being among the most beautiful in the world. With style and sex appeal, the Hungarians don’t need to be afraid to gracefully show their natural beauty. Likewise, Hungarian men in Budapest maintain a modern and sleek style, which is most appropriate for a city that is increasingly becoming more cosmopolitan and modern.

Certainly, you don’t need to be a movie star to excite your partner and enjoy a regular and healthy sex life. It doesn’t matter what color, weight, measurement or sexual preference you have if you try to get to know your lover better and enjoy the intimate moments you share during a sexual encounter. A dinner of his or her favorite dishes, fruits and wine of high quality are the classic first step to an intense night. In Budapest, one can find many restaurants where you can good food and drinks at reasonable prices. If you are more daring, Budapest has a number of things to offer: gay discos, bars and clubs for swingers as well as respected strip tease clubs where you and your partner can wildly engage in your wildest secret fantasies. If you want something kinkier, there are also stores selling a variety of erotica in the Hungarian capital. Don’t be reluctant to inquire about your most secret fetishes.

Museums, open-air concerts, galleries, green spaces and traditional as well as modern architecture offer the perfect setting for a walk together and a conversation to stimulate both the intellect and the senses. Discover all of this with your partner amidst the beauty of the Danube in spring. Budapest may allow you to uncover fresh, new passions, stimulating your senses and your spirits along the city’s streets, plazas and lovely parks.

Set in the former headquarters of the secret police of both the Nazi regime and the Communists during the Soviet occupation, is Budapest’s ‘House of Terror Museum’. Located at 60 Andrássy Avenue the building is hard to miss with the word ‘Terror’ written in large letters in a black passepartout at the top of the building.

Hungary allied themselves with Hitler to save their Jewish population, but soon after was overtaken by the Nazi-affiliated Arrow Cross in the dying days of World War II. Arrow Cross members killed Jews in the streets and shot them into the freezing Danube River that runs through Budapest. Hundreds however, where executed in the basement of 60 Andrássy Avenue. When the communists took over Hungary, this building was again used as headquarters of their secret police (the ÁVO) and used to terrorize, detain, torture and execute individuals suspected of being an enemy of the state.

The museum tells the story of the the double-occupation of the Germans and the Soviets over five harrowing decades and the suffering, atrocities and deprivation that affected so many. Whilst makes for a grim way to spend a morning or afternoon is definitely worth the visit on your trip to Budapest.

As soon as you enter the muesum atrium, which rises three floors up, you are faced with a Soviet tank which appears menacing and overbearing in an enclosed space. The the surrounding walls are covered in black and white portraits of each of the victims who died in this building during the 50 years of the two occupations.
Each room has a theme, starting with the period prior to the first occupation when things were normal followed by the two separate occupation periods, detailing the crimes and atrocities that went on, not only at 60 Andrássy Avenue but across the entire country. The rooms use audio visual displays, excerpts from television broadcasts, radio shows, photos, propaganda posters and interviews from individuals and families who survived. With one in three families effected over the 50 years there are an insurmountable number of stories to be told and this museum does them justice.

Whilst most of the exhibit information is in Hungarian, most of the movies have English subtitles and each room has a information sheet in English that you can take and read as you walk around. The last section of the museum begins as you enter a elevator to the ex-prison basement. The elevator is programmed to descend slowly as video plays showing a guard explaining the execution process. During the 1950s the basement of this building was a witness to the horrendous torture of prisoners. Today the cells have been left as they were at the end of the soviet occupation are chilling reminder of what happened there.

The final rooms could not be more opposite, one shows the festive atmosphere and the excitement surrounding the days in 1991 when the Soviets departed. The final room that you leave through however has a more somber atmosphere. The walls of room are lined with the names and photos of the “victimizers”, local communist members and supporters of the Arrow Cross and ÁVO, many of whom are still living, and who were never brought to justice. The House of Terror Museum is essential for anyone with an interest in the history of not only Hungary’s struggle for freedom but the whole of Eastern Europe.

For more information http://www.terrorhaza.hu/en/index_2.html The museum is located at 60 Andrássy Avenue, 1062 Budapest. Full price adult admission is 2000 HUF.

From the 13 to 21 of April the 19th Titanic International Film Festival in Budapest that is projected in four art cinemas in the city, including the Urania movie theater will be held. This event brings together filmmakers, national and international artists, producers, and film lovers to enjoy the latest creations and to participate in the competition.

The first Festival was held in 1994, but it took several years to transform into a competition and only in 2006 it was structured as such. So every year films are divided into categories and themes. The festival lasts 10 days and the prize awarded to the winning film is known as the Breaking Waves, which was designed by Luca Görömbe. In addition, they give € 10,000 to the winning film director.

While this festival is new to the circuit of this type of worldwide activities, it stands out to develop an interesting proposal that accommodates emerging and established filmmakers of all levels and all types of film, leaving the door to creativity open. This edition had to deal with financial problems, which have been exacerbated by the economic crisis in Europe, and therefore this year it will be more modest, but the same spirit as the previous festivals remains intact.

Despite its youth, the Titanic International Film Festival in Budapest has won wider international notority. The 2011 edition was won by the Swedish film Savage by Martin Jern and Emil Larsson and produced by Dansk AB Kalle

The festival starts with the premise of giving film the place it deserves in Hungarian society, because music, dance, theater and festivals have their own part of local culture, therefore also attracting public from across Europe. The essence of its foundation was to motivate society to go to the movie theaters and give it them an important place in their leisure activities, both in a cultural and fun context. Also, it generated a dynamic resurgence of local film production that motivated investment in film production.

This year 2012 the festival has called on Budapest society to attend and enjoy the best of international cinema, but especially to reunite themselves with Hungarian cinema. In its manifesto the festival organizers say that this show will focus on Hungarian cinema, without ceasing to be a showcase for international cinema. Their proposal is to revitalize creation and to bond local filmmakers with the local and international audience.

The basis for the 2012 contest states that films submitted to contest should not have been previously screened in Hungary, only expecting fiction films which are longer than 70 minutes

One of the most traditional spring activities in Budapest is held every year at Óbuda square: the Spring Wine and Jazz Festival. People from all over Hungary and many tourists from around the world will enjoy two days of wine and the best Hungarian jazz bands.

Although the grape harvest in Hungary is in September, the wine festival takes place in spring, because the rolled grape juice has decanted and turned into a delicious wine or sparkling wine. It also welcomes the sun and warm longer days; they leave in oblivion the cold winter.

Wine and jazz are together in this festival as they are also intimately linked by history. Just as jazz is passion, rhythm, character and sophistication, wine is the ideal complement, because it exacerbates all the emotions and stimulates the passions. Nothing better than listening to blues and dixie in the beautiful old town square: live music and a nice glass of wine in hand.

During two days in April you will have the chance to taste the best wines in Europe, and buy some offers to enjoy it at home. But most importantly, taste the wines of the house, as Hungarian producers strive to have very good quality wines at very cheap prices.

Hungary is famous for its delicious wines that complement its culinary culture. Tokaji wine is known to come from the region of Tokaj-Hegyalja. Roumor has it that the countess Susana Lorántffy, wife of the Transylvanian Prince George Rákóczi, personally took care of the vineyards, but one year , and due to the constant wars with the Turks the harvesting was postponed until November, resulting it in a sweet and concentrate wine, which identifies the Tokaji wine.

The Bikavér is a cuvée, the bull’s blood of Hungarian wines. This wine is a real treasure among Hungarian wines that comes from Szekszárd and has a law to protect production, which is a regulation to produce wine and grapes of the kind needed to its production.

Also Szamorodni wine is produced from the grapes affected by the Botrytis cinerea fungus. When the grapes have lost water and have a greater amount of sugar, the wine is produced with a higher quantity of alcohol than normal.

Then there is also the wine manufactured with Eszencia aszú grapes, It is pretty sweet and also considered as one of the most expensive wines in the world. There is also the Fordítás, a sweet wine and wine Máslás.

This festival brings together elements that are part of the Budapest culture, that is why everyone waits for the Spring to celebrate the arrival of the spring and the beginning of a new production of fine wines.

Until the 10th of June the Ludwig Museum in Budapest exhibits “The Space of the Image”, which defines the conceptual aspects of the works by János Megyik. The exhibition takes questions that Megyik contantly asked himself about art and the place of painting, since his great work was on the edges of the painting, sculpture and architecture modeling of structures and painted panels.

The exhibition examines the work of Megyick and his research focused on spatiality, asking how to do the painting on the table in the world Megyick to create a three dimensional model. To answer this question, the exhibition explores its wooden buildings, frames, cardboard reliefs and plaques with stain of his last period as an architect.

Megyik János was born in Szolnok, Hungary in 1938. Between 1950 and 1954 he studied painting with Károly Harmos in Rev Komarno in Slovakia. In 1954 he moved his residence to Budapest and studied for two years at the Institute of Fine Arts, Applied Arts and in 1956 immigrated to Vienna. There he studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts where he met Andersen, Dobrowsky and Boeckl.

In 1963 he began studying painting on the table and the reflection that produces three-dimensional models, being heavily influenced by studies of projective geometry. A decade later he used his space studies to create metal sculptures, a material that he changed for the wood years later, while including interesting architectural plans to achieve them.

In 1972, he exhibited his work Construction of Nothing done with Alpár Bujdoso at the First Hungarian Conference Workshop held in Marly le Roi. Projective geometry and subjectivity of the planes were the essence of his artwork, especially in his relief work with steel plates that dominated his work in the 90′s, playing with geometric shapes and perspective in space.

The year 1977 he made photograms for his sculptures in wood. His enormous capacity to investigate the figure, the planes and movement, led him to work with the human figure in the 80′s, when he moved to New York to continue studying. His eyes from the human body and the plasma in three-dimensional sculpture with fine ribs, gave the picture motion, despite the rigidity of the material.

In 1991 he was awarded with the Munkácsy Prize in recognition of his work and contribution to culture. In the late 90 he started working in Kötcse, province of Somogy and traveled to Rome to study with a grant from the Hungarian Academy.

János Megyik has worked and experimented with his work freely and poetic geometry. Its delicate sculptures, made with perfection and thoroughness is one of the most interesting of the twentieth century, not only because it experiences forms, but because it works with innovative materials such as large sculptures made by wood.

While most of us have the habit of eating what is known, there are those who often seek exotic foods that are able to make us cringe just by hearing about them. For those who like weird food, we will tell you about some Hungary preparations that qualify in that group, we’ll give you the recipe for you to cook them at home and will tell you where to eat them when traveling in Budapest.

Hungary has exquisite cuisine whose origin is from the rural culture. As a country has cold, long winters, almost all dishes are cooked with lard and previously smoked products, such as salami and some other meats. Also, their cuisine has a lot of spices, which give an interesting spicy touch. But since nothing is wasted in the rural cuisine, there are also rare dishes in that area, which are difficult taste.

One of those rare dishes is the “goose liver in its fat” or Rantott Iibamajzeletek. Believe it or not, this dish is in the menu of all the fancy restaurants in Budapest, so I’ll tell you it is prepared.

The liver is put to soak in milk one hour before cooking to reduce their strong taste. Then salted and fried in butter, goose or pork, add chopped onions, tomato and pepper. When the onion begins to brown, add wine and broth until soft. Finally put it in the oven until it becomes golden brown. Cool and cut into slices, which are served with onions and tomatoes cooked in lard.

You can fine this delicious preparation at Szent Jupat Étterem restaurant, located in Dékán utca 3, Budapest. This is an affordable place that offers food that makes your money worth.

Bakonyi Betyárleves qualifies as rare culinary specialty, is prepared with pork leg with hoof, sour cream, potatoes, vinegar, garlic and egg. Cook the leg of pork with garlic, mashed potatoes and cut into given until tender. When cooked, remove it from the water and cut the meat into small pieces. In a separate pan mix it well with the sour cream with flour, an egg and pour the broth, then added vinegar. The soup is served boiling chips are added leg meat.

This soup can be found in any restaurant in Budapest, was a meal of the rural poor, hence inherits its name because it was eaten by the harvesters.

A rural traditional breakfast dish is the fresh blood of the pork fried with onions. This preparation has its origin when pigs were sacrificed at dawn, it was the tradition to put the blood into a pan with lard and onions with some salt. This dish is not on the menu cards of restaurants.
