The Hungaroring Grand Prix Circuit

I’m not a big follower of Formula 1 but even I can name some race tracks. Formula 1 racetracks like Monaco, Silverstone, Nürburgring or Hockenheimring easily come to mind. The Hungaroring might be less known but it is nonetheless a notorious race track, because of its degree of difficulty and historical significance during the Cold War. It is a venue right outside of Budapest and in 1986 it became the location of the first Formula 1 race behind the “Iron Curtain”.

In 1983 Bernie Ecclestone, the president and CEO of the organisations that stand behind Formula 1 racing, wanted to race in the USSR which at the time was a pretty outrageous idea. Upon the recommendation of a friend, and after formalities were dealt with, construction outside of Budapest began. Within only 8 months the track was done. No other circuit has been built this fast. It is said to be one of the most beautifully sited race tracks ever built and nowadays it takes the 3rd place among sights that people visit in Hungary.

This year’s season has started in March and the Grand Prix of Hungary 2010 will take place from the 29th of July until the 1st of August. Due to the hot and dusty climate this time of year and the tight and twisty corners it is a rather difficult circuit.

Like every year the race will attract a lot of visitors. So if you’re into Formula 1 racing you should take a trip to Budapest during this time of year. And if car races are the last thing on your mind take a trip to Budapest to experience one of the most beautiful European cities during the summer. You don’t have to be a race nut to rent apartments in Budapest.
