These are hydrothermal caves, with many unexpected passages and beautiful natural formations. Unfortunately only four out of 200 caves can be visited, or rather are open to the public. Some of the caves in the entire territory of Hungary have well appointed stairs, ladders, and others remained in their natural state and open to the public, ideal for those who are not afraid to wet, climb and grow in the special environment. Pálvölgyi, the cave is located in the Buda hills, at the basement of the country. The very pure air of this beautiful cave is attributed to the healing powers. It is observed to impart therapeutic affects to the body. Pálvölgyi cave is about 14 kilometers long, the third largest cave in Hungary.

The cave is one of the most interesting caves and has a stalactite room with magical figures which are similar in form to the Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Since 1944, the cave is among the list of Hungary´s natural reserves.

The cave is known for its drips, but much more interesting are the high-ceilinged corridors, significant differences between levels, and how mineral waters have shaped the rock into unusual shapes. It is a world that seems to have petrified, even where the temperature remains constant (52 ° F or 11 ° C) throughout the year.

The cave is located in mountains and can be visited by tourists, who enjoy the most bizarre stalactite formations. The structures are reminiscent of animal figures, such as elephants and crocodiles. The rock ceiling of the cave is a half-million years old and the stories the tour guides are also part of the deep past. The newly built 500 m long hiking trail promises many surprises: it leads us into a magical world where unusual rock formations have remained unchanged for thousands of years, the solidified state.

There are organized tours every hour, which lasts 50 minutes and runs 500 meters from the cave, through ladders and steep stairs, so not recommended for people with physical problems or children under 5 years. The tour organizers will supply coveralls, helmets, and headlights. You should definitely be dressed warmly because the temperature in the cave is 11 degrees Celsius throughout the year. For this cave, no experience in caving is required as such, but a good physic condition is necessary. You should also be good to walk – the path has some difficult (stair) sections. The guides are

Budapest is known for its extraordinary beauty, its incredible spas and its historical parks like the Memento Park. But we must not underestimate the incredible hidden treasures of the city. Below its historic castle there is a particular labyrinth of narrow streets and alleyways to discover. Many of these underground labyrinthes date back to the Middle Ages and are absolutely dark.

You can also visit some caves that date back to ancient times and which were also used as underground paths during the war or prisons for torture and places to hide treasures. In addition to exploring the caves and labyrinthes, you can visit the best wineries located inside them. Once inside, take advantage and enjoy a glass of wine.

In the past, the caves served as refuge and as a preserve for game that was hunted. They were also ancestral homes five hundred thousand years ago. After the year 2000 the labyrinthe has turned into a famous trip for million visitors, thanks to the famous “Visit with the oil lamps”. It is an enigmatic and mysterious place that captures the attention of the visitors. Here there are really special places such as the World Axis, Menhir, the Tree of the shaman, the obelisk (a tree that reaches to heaven in the popular fairy tales)…

In the ancient labyrinth there are many paintings of animals and very symbolic drawings. There is also a beautiful statue representing a shaman because the ancient Hungarians believed in Shamanism, a very popular religion in Eastern Asia. The shaman is a magician of the Hungarian tradition. He is also the spiritual conductor, the priest and the divine healer. But then we discover other hidden symbols of the Hungarian tradition, like the enchanted deer, who was an idol to the Hungarian people.

This is a world that brings us back to the history of Hungary and leaves us fascinated. If you are a curious person and you want to know more about this city, come and rent apartments in Budapest. You´ll have a great time, but be careful not to get lost in the labyrinthe!

Budapest for the curious

The amazing city of Budapest is known for its extraordinary beauty and its wonderful and relaxing spas. Many people have no idea about them, but there are places of extraordinary natural beauty, beautiful underground spaces and mysterious and enigmatic places: the enigmatic caves of Budapest.

The first caves you should visit were formed many thousands of years ago thanks to the hot springs. Among the 200 caves of Budapest only four can now be visited. But all of them are special, because they have cold temperatures in summer and strange morphologies. The temperature is around 14 degrees and the humidity around 90%. Below the castle of Buda the caves extend about 10 kilometres. These caves were used by prehistoric men in order to hide from enemies and as a reserve for food.

When they found the cellars of the castle they found that there was a labyrinth there. This amazing series of tunnels and caves are part of the ten most popular places of cultural interest in Budapest, regarded as one of the seven underground wonders. About 4,000 square metres called “Labyrinth” can be visited today. The visiting hours are from 9:30 to 19:30.

One of the most special caves is that of Monte Gerardo which is also known as the Szent Iván cave which has its entrance 20 metres above the water level of the Danube. In 1925/26 new galleries were created as a result of some explosions.

The Pà lvölgyi cave is the second biggest in Hungary, around 14 kilometres long that was discovered accidentally. The cave is famous for its stalagmites, its enormous halls and all the amazing paths that are created thanks to the thermal water. Taking the tourist route along 500 metres it is possible to see a great quantity of curiosities: fabulous stalagmites, strange rocks and a constant temperature throughout the year of 11°C.

At the end of our journey we’ll find the strange subterranean Szemlôhegy cave. This was accidentally discovered in 1930 during an excavation. After years of work, it was opened to the public around 1986. Nowadays only 300 metres of the original route can be visited, which is illuminated. Children feel very drawn by the curves in the form of animals as well as the shapes in the room called “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.” Since 1990 sick people go there to heal themselves through the purity of the air, since it makes you seem you´re high up in the mountains. The humidity is around 100%, which is very good for the health. The dust content in the air is minimal.

What do you think? Is it curious? This cosmopolitan city offers you special things to see and to do. Summer is approaching, what are you waiting for? Rent your apartments in Budapest and live fantastic adventures in the dark caves.
