Rebecca Musical in Budapest
The Budapest Operetta and Musical Theatre, during several dates in February, March and April 2012 shows seven passes of a musical that will cause outcry in the Hungarian capital, Rebecca – The Mistress Of Manderley. Sure, some can now elucidate the plot of this musical, especially those who have had the pleasure of getting lost in the pages of the original novel by Daphne du Maurier.

The novel was published in 1938, making Maurier one of the most famous writers of the moment and this novel in her best work.
Rebeccas argument is full of mystery and a heavy atmosphere that becomes increasingly tense, which was a suitable climate for the genius of suspense, Alfred Hitchcock to make it into a film with Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine in the cast. The story unfolds when the widower Maxim Winter meets a young woman in Monte Carlo, who soon became the new Mrs. Winter. Her name will not be revealed in this story, because after moving into the Manderley mansion of The Winters, the new Mrs. Winter realized that the deceased Rebecca Winter is still present in the minds of everybody in the mansion. The housekeeper and the new character of Mr. Winter after moving to a gloomy and mysterious house, leads to a disturbing story that keeps the intrigue of Rebecca’s life and death to the end. The housekeeper increasingly unsettle the new Mrs. Winter and we will see how Max is letting himself being absorbed by the darkness of the house.
It is a challenge to convert one of the most important thriller stories into a musical, but Michael Kunze and Sylvester Lévay have managed to do an excellent job. The premier should have been in London that is why the script is written in English, but was ultimately the Raimund Theater in Vienna, was the chosen location for the premier. In Budapest, is expected to harvest the same success as in previous performances or more.
The actors and actresses, who will perform in this wonderful musical, have already been chosen. Zsuzsi Vágó will play the new Mrs. Winter, Szilveszter Szabó P. – Maxim Winter and Kata Janza – the housekeeper, Mrs. Danvers. We will be able to enjoy this second to none musical starting on the 6th of March.

The Budapest Operetta hosts such native operettas based on Hungarian history and contemporary works, always trying to entertain as much as possible and investing in young talent.
The clash of cultures in the style of Love Story is the main theme of this operetta. Set in a distant land in rural Transylvania, where Romanians, Hungarians and Gypsies live together. The beautiful Zorika is the protagonist of this story. Daughter of Peter Dragoje, a rich feudal lord, Zorika must follow the plans of her father who is dedicated to making preparations to marry her to the son of a wealthy farmer neighbor of the family, Gabor. A very suitable marriage, taking into accounts the social class Zorika and Gabor belong to.
But as expected the thing is not so simple. Józsi, Zorika’s gypsy love from childhood, returns to the city to disrupt the agreed ceremony. This violinist gets achieved his goal and Zorika escaped with him with the nomadic Gypsies. The problem does not end there. Llona completes the loving quartet, whose discord and misunderstandings make us vibrate.
The musical’s lesson is clear, above all hatred that can arise between different cultures, it is the love what manages to create peace and understanding.
