A typical Hungarian breakfast

Everyone should start the day with a hearty and delicious breakfast, however not everyone have the time and inspiration to cook in the morning. In this case, a typical Hungarian breakfast is the answer. Grab some fresh bread and meat, chop some vegetables, make toast and put creamy things on it. It is all up to you. You’ll see how Budapest is even more beautiful when you enjoy it in the morning with a full stomach.

typical-hungarian-breakfast

Májkrém (which literally mean cream liver) goes very well with both, fresh bread and toast. Spicy cream is one of the most common ingredients of the Hungarian sandwich, which is a very popular snack in Budapest.

It is important to note that májkrém is not the same as the famous and expensive Hungarian libamáj (goose liver), which is also an exquisite culinary adventure.

Salami is one of the most famous dishes in Hungary. It is normally produced with spices, smoked and cured. It has a very unique flavor.

Cold meat is also very popular when you want to eat something quick and simple. It can be boiled, fresh, dried or smoked. You can eat it in sandwiches or as a side dish.

You can also have Túró for breakfast (Hungarian quark or cottage cheese), which is a very important ingredient for sandwiches and salads, but it can also be used for making cheesecake or pancakes. There is a kind of special Túró with chopped onion, peppers, tomatoes and paprika called kőrözött.

If you find some eggplants in your kitchen, you can easily make an eggplant cream. Just roast the eggplant, and boil the soft parts.

There is also Greavel cream in Hungary. Greavel is basically animal fat that they eat very often with breakfast, but sometimes, when they get tired of chewing, they make salty cream gravel. After eating that it is advisable to do some jogging.

Hurka is a special type of boiled sausage. There are two types: one made of liver, rice (Majas hurka) and another made with cooked blood, dry rice, salt, pepper and spices (Veres hurka).

However, the most popular breakfast in Budapest is the villásreggeli (literally breakfast with fork), it contains scrambled eggs and omelets, which are very popular as the first meal of the day. Villásreggeli is mainly served with some spices, as Hungarian paprika, as well as vegetables including onions.

Another food that many Hungarians love eating in their sandwiches is the cow tongue. The good thing is that it doesn’t look like a tongue at all after cutting, seasoning and cooking it.

Disznósajt (brawn) is made with gelatin, slices of meat of different origins, spices and other things we do not want to know.

Or you can make deviled eggs in just 10 minutes, sprinkle with paprika and serve with toasted bread, sliced onion, mustard and, in case you have, a slice of fried chicken breast from the previous day.

The crepes are also a good option if you want to start the day with something sweet. But have in mind that Hungarians make very thin pancakes stuffed with a thick Hungarian jam and dark chocolate sauce and are served rolled.

Budapest Winter Festival

Hungary, Budapest, Gőzölgő Festival, food, music, concerts, Erzsébet Square, cocktails, wines, Akvarium Klub, Hungarian cuisine, Pálinka, Kürtőskalács, mulled wine,

It is a constant in the Hungarian capital: its taste for festivals and cultural events. If spring brings together all lovers of music and the arts, in winter the city prepares for the  Gőzölgő Festival, focusing on local cuisine and of course music.

While warming spirit with the sounds of bandscoming from all corners of the country or in neighboring Germany, you can taste the Hungarian delicacies and above all and especially, their spirits and wines. Best of all: access to the concerts are free.

budapest-winter-festival

Where?

The Gőzölgő Festival is celebrated in the  Erzsébet Square (Erzsébet tér in case you have to find the place in the guide), named on behalf of Empress Elisabeth “Sissi”, Erzebet in Hungarian, and presided over by a beautiful fountain symbolizing the four rivers of Hungary. The square is in the 5th street, on the Pest side.

The Gőzölgő Festival is held during the last weekend of February. In 2013 will be from the 23 to the 26. The stalls are open from noon to 10 pm. In addition there are special exhibitions of experts cocktail makers, wines and hot drinks, typically between 4 and 6 pm. These tastings prepare the body for concerts at nightfall.

Who organizes it?

The Gőzölgő Budapest Festival is organized by Akvarium Klub, located in the Plaza Erzesébet, so do not miss it. The Akvarium is not a simple nightclub as it is a true cultural space with live concerts, dance classes and cultural programs that change weekly.

Located in a charming building, it t is one of those essential places of Budapest´s nightlife.

Hungarian Gastronomy

Of course, you have to enjoy live concerts and live ¡the evening, but the traveler can not miss good food and local wine´s tasting . You can try it and buy it to take it home. Write down the following names to not miss the best of this exquisite cuisine:

Pálinka. It is a spirituous liquor (with medicinal properties) made with native fruits and present in the Hungarian wineries from the late fifteenth century. Apricot can be (Barack), plum (Szilva), cherry (Cseresznye), pear (Korte) and specialties.
Kürtőskalács. It is a spiral-shaped cake originally from Transylvania. It takes a special oven to bake, so it´s a professional confectionery and is very difficult to do in a home. It is made with sugar, oil, flour and dried fruit.
Mulled wine. A classic of the area mixed with tea, coffee, fruit juices. It is also common to find flavored with cinnamon or ginger. If you like strong drinks, then you have to mix it with Pálinka.

And finally,  remember that more than 100 varieties of coffee, tea, tea, sweets, wines, spirits and local delicacies come together in this winter festival.

Budapest in LOVE

There is nothing better than wander through the streets of Budapest with your loved one. For centuries the Danube River has been a source of inspiration for writers, filmmakers and theater producers. Buda and Pest are separated by the blue Danube, which is actually the longest river in Europe that spreads across up to 10 countries. Let’s follow this fantastic water source at the known as the Pearl of the Danube. Budapest awaits.

romantic-budapest

Chain Bridge

Let’s start our tour at the magical Chain Bridge. On one side you’ll find the Sisi Bridge and on the other side, the Franz Joseph Bridge. From there you will have an overview of the two sides of Budapest, which is the perfect place to start exploring the city.

Breakfast at Cafe New York

If you need to charge your batteries before this tour, you want to have breakfast at Café New York. Although it isn’t very cheap, it´s worth going there just to see its architecture. This building will make you feel like being part of a movie from the 30s in New York. It seems like an ancient palace. The waiters are elegantly dressed to serve the most selected clientele of the cafe. There you can also find some tourists, which you’ll recognize by how they are dressed. I must say that although this is a luxury place, there is no dress code required.

Erzsébet Park

To continue our tour we’ll head to Pest to enjoy a relaxing walk in the Erzsébet Park. There you’ll find many padlocks hanged by young lovers and honeymooners inspired by Federico Moccia´s novel “Want you”. It its possible to buy these padlocks in many places throughout the city, you only have to write your names on one of them, close it and keep the key forever.

The Szechenyi thermal baths

It is impossible to come to Budapest and not going to Szechenyi thermal baths. This is a very romantic and very pleasant plan to do with your loved one. There are hot and cold pools, steam rooms, saunas … and there you can even play chess on floating tables in the water. Chess players create great excitement among the locals, since Chess is considered as a very important sport in Budapest. Szechenyi thermal baths offer a very relaxed getaway, while renewing your energy.

A romantic dinner at Flamingo restaurant

One of the best things of a romantic day is to go for dinner. Well, in the Erzsébetváros area, Dob street 55, you will find a very nice restaurant called Flamingo. The best thing of this restaurant is its terrace, which is cozy and full of flowers. There you’ll enjoy a great evening with live music (usually a pianist) and the best Hungarian cuisine as well as international dish. Don’t forget to try the Hungarian wine, which will make the whole dinner even more special.

Have a drink on an evening cruise on the Danube

But our evening doesn’t have to end with dinner. Once you have eaten you can go ahead and enjoy a nice cruise on the Danube with friends. Some cruises even include dinner. Navigating the river and seeing the whole city lit is a second to none experience. From there you can make some pictures to remember with the best views of the city.

Gastronomical guide to Budapest

Gastronomy in Budapest and in Hungary in general is abundant in spices, the most famous of which is paprika, which is used in many of this country´s typical dishes. In Hungarian cuisine, the most famous dish is goulash, whose ancient origin comes from the rural classes. The dish is made out different meats, vegetables, legumes and, of course, paprika, the national spice. It´s a comforting meal if it´s cold outside, since temperatures in Budapest can be quite low during the winter months, which makes it no surprise that abundant meals predominate most of the Hungarian recipe books.

gastronomical-guide-budapest

Also, Hungary has a wide range of wines, beers and regional spirits of the highest quality.

Budapest has nothing to envy about the other great European capitals, famous for having the best cuisine in the world, since this city is currently experimenting a revolution when it comes to cuisine. Even Michelin stars have arrived in the city, the biggest award and honour for any restaurant.

Here´s a list of some of the most famous and typical restaurants in Budapest, so that you can enjoy its wide gastronomical range with different traditional atmospheres and music:

  • Alabárdos: Located inside the castle and surrounded by 15th-century buildings, this restaurant has a long tradition that enables you to sample classic Hungarian dishes with a modern twist. (Országház utca 2 H – Buda 1014)

  • Tigris: One of the most popular in the city, this bistrot offers more informal atmosphere and serves typical Hungarian dishes and wines elaborated with a lot of care. (Mérleg utca 10 H – Pest 1051).

  • Vár: a Speiz: Also located close to the castle, this restaurant offers an excellent menu made up of rustic yet delicious Hungarian dishes. The meaning of this name, for the curious ones out there, is ´the Castle´s pantry´. (Hess András tér 6 H – Buda 1014).

  • Pierrot: If you´re looking for something more elegant, this is the right place. Located inside a historical house, it has an excellent menu with traditional Hungarian recipes and live piano sessions entertain the guests.(Fortuna utca 14 H – Buda 1014).

  • Gundel: This restaurant with an excellent atmosphere is located in a villa inside a park in Budapest. As well as its speciality in Gundel-style crêpes, there´s a wide range of typical Hungarian dishes. And that´s not all, since you can also enjoy a live gypsy orchestra in its large column room. (Állatkerti utca 2 H – Pest 1146).

And so, if you´re in Budapest, don´t miss out on visiting some of these restaurants where you´ll enjoy an authentic tasting experience, a pleasure for your senses in the new capital of gastronomy, where Michelin stars, tradition and modernity come together to offer you the best dishes and atmospheres in this country.

Mangalica Festival in Budapest

A whole festival dedicated to a type of pig that is born and raised in Hungary, an animal which has been a fundamental part of Hungarian cuisine and that today is protected with supervised breeding of the highest quality: the Mangalica. It´s a pig of considerable size and of a unique appearance that also has long curly hair, almost like a ´funk´ pig. Of course, this is just the appearance because the important thing is the flavour, which is loved by all the people who attend this festival dedicated to this animal year after year.

mangalica-festival-budapest

Hungarian cooking tradition owes a lot to the Mangalica, something which has always been acknowledged, although it was in 2007 that a group of breeding enthusiasts and gastronomical entrepreneurs, as well as the local council, decided to organize a gastronomical festival about the products, sub-products, typical dishes, history, breeding techniques and everything about this type of pig. The result became one of the most popular festivals in Budapest.

The even consists in a large national exhibition of breeders of this type of pig as well as restaurants, chefs, wine stands, regional spirits, sub-products of the Mangalica and producers of honey, cheeses, chocolates and jams. As well as the gastronomical side, there are many activities for children and live music, the latter being a section that grows year after year, focusing on folk, medieval and traditional genres. On the other hand, there´s the cooking competition that can be individual or in group.

To participate in the cooking competition, you will have had to have sent a form well in advance, since nothing goes unplanned with the event organization board. The main thing is to have a large quantity of Mangalica meat, both for cooking in the food stands and in the competition, and this is never a letdown, since there might be too much of it but never too little. Regarding the food that is consumed at the festival, especially the roast food, it´s strictly controlled by the Mangalica National Association so that they don´t come across breeders that do not comply with the rigorous quality controls.

The festival has been taking place for six years in different locations in Hungary, being the biggest festival of the capital, Budapest. In this 2013 edition, it will be moving to Liberty Square due to the commodity of access to the place with public transport and also the commodity of having a large green area there. Also, there will be sheds for the exhibition of the different types of Mangalicas, the most popular ones in the country.

The festival will take place from the 8th to the 10th of February and entry is free, yet another reason to seriously consider visiting Budapest on these dates and enjoy the country´s most typical gastronomy and products. All of this will accompanied by an excellent selection of bands that will liven up one of the most popular winter festivals and, of course, with the best atmosphere, service and warmth on behalf of the people of Budapest.

Rudas Thermal Bath

Budapest is one of the few cities in the world that have access to hot springs and it is also known as the city of spas since the 30s.

rudas-thermal-bath

Visitors have the chance to visit a wide variety of hot springs spas, which offer many health treatments and other leisure services.

At the end of the 19th century, a sauna and a therapeutic swimming facility were added. The bath also has an outpatient hospital during the day, which contains a complex physiotherapy section and a drinking hall, where the water of the springs Hungária, Attila and Juventus can be consumed.

Gellert may be the most famous spa in Budapest, but Rudas is the oldest one. The building dates from the 16th century, when the Turks built the spa facilities to make the most of the 80 geothermal springs in the city. The Ottoman influence can still be seen in the octagonal pool, covered by a huge 10-meter diameter dome, eight pillars, six pools and steam baths. Try a massage under water at 3 am (the bathroom is open until 4 on Fridays and Saturdays). Note that the spa is open only for men during the week, except Tuesdays when it´s just for women; the weekend is mixed bathing.

For just 4 € you can access the baths in the morning, from 10 € you can enjoy the baths at night and the cheapest package of massages costs 8 €.

The spa is open from 6 am every day and closes at 6 pm from Monday to Wednesday and at 8 pm from Thursday to Sunday. The hot spring section is open from 6 am to 8 pm every day. The bath section is open from 8 am to 8 pm Monday through Friday only. The night swim schedule is from 10 pm until 4 am on Fridays and Saturdays.

Remember that on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, the spa is only open for men and Tuesday is a day only for women. Saturday and Sunday is open to both men and women, during which time the bathing suits are required.

The spa is located below the Gellert hill right next to the Danube, close to Elisabeth Bridge (Erzsébet híd), on the Buda side of the city. To reach the Rudas spa, you can use public transportation. To get there by bus: take lines 5, 7, 8, 86 or 112. It is also easily accessible with the tram: lines 18 and 19. The address is Döbrentei tér 9, H-1013 Budapest, Rudas Gyógyfürdő és Uszoda.

This spa was built in 1550 and then rebuilt in 1566 by Mustafa Pasha Sokoli. Some characteristics of the Turkish period are still being used today: the octagonal pool, the four small pools, each with different water temperature, and the characteristic Turkish dome.

WAMP Budapest: The International Design Fair is in fashion

If the Swedes have a reputation for being the creators of the IKEA world, the Hungarians are not far behind in that aspect. They are the kings of what could be labelled the eighth art. WAMP is the design fair par excellence and if you go to Budapest, you can come back with many ideas and anecdotes of this field. This is a fair for professionals and design fans attracted by the beauty of its shapes. Welcome to the International Design Fair.

wamp-budapest-2012

WAMP is a fair that makes the Hungarians proud, and rightly so. It´s definitely worth a visit. Its first edition was in 2006 and it was so successful that it has been prolonged until today, with a record attendance in each edition. It takes place once a month and, on many occasions and weather permitting, the stands are set up on Erzsébet Square, while in the winter, the fair takes place indoors at the Club Gödör.

This design fair is very successful not just in Budapest but also in other places around the world. The mouth-to-mouth and the social networks are in charge of spreading its message and attracting thousands of followers. Actually, on its Facebook page, it has millions of fans, since WAMP isn´t just a place for shopping but also a meeting point for young Hungarians.

There are items for all tastes and some of them very original. And that´s what it´s about, from clothes, leather goods, furniture, photography, paintings, recycled items, jewellery, ceramics, gastronomy items, toys and decoration items. This is a place where electronic music mixes with art, a curious mix but a unique experience nonetheless. In this independent design fair, that seems to be very popular and in fashion, more than a hundred artists take part in it. Entry is free and it´s also within everyone´s reach. Art isn´t a luxury and we have to get that idea out of our head when we go to this type of events. We could say that “design isn´t a luxury product” is its motto, since there you can find affordable items for all wallets. The most exquisite characters can also buy luxury items, but the norm is that most things on sale are excellent value for money.

The profile of the WAMP visitors is varied. Young people from 15 to 35 years old attend, as well as some 40 and 50 somethings that are in search for something different to what they already have. The truth is that it´s a meeting place for artists and buyers, one of those places that you always end up buying something.

Such has been its reception in the city of Budapest that the organizers of the International Fair of Design, WAMP, have been studying the possibility of extending and setting up in other Hungarian cities, and even as far as moving to the Netherlands.

And if you visit this fair and you still want more art, the best thing to do is walk around the beautiful Chain Bridge (crossing the Danube is pure art) or visit the Parliament Building, where you can lose yourself in the beauty of the ancestors of this city. In Budapest, everything is affordable art; in the streets, in the squares… there´s nothing like travelling to this city, known as the Pearl of the Danube, to enjoy its street art.

If you want to visit the International Fair of Design, WAMP, start by booking your accommodation in Budapest here. Come on, what are you waiting for? This is a luxury within everyone´s reach, since design can fit in any pocket.

World Cup Qualification 2014. Clash of the Titans: Hungary vs. Turkey

On Tuesday the 16th of October, the Ferenc Puskás Stadium in Budapest will be the host location of one of the most exciting games of the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualificationUEFA Group D; Hungary vs. Turkey.

The Hungarian team, coached by the famous Sandor Egervari, had a very good opening game after thrashing Andorra 5-0, which gave the team good confidence to play against the Netherlands. However, despite their best effort and without the goals from Zoltán Gera, who was out of the match due to an injury, the Oranje team defeated Hungary 4-1.

world-cup-qualification-2012-hungary-vs-turkey

It’s been long time since Hungary was one of the best teams in the world. The Magyars haven’t qualified for the World cup since Mexico 1986, in which they lost 6-0 against the former Soviet Union and 3-0 against France, while being only able to beat the Canadian team 2-0.

Turkey also lost against the Netherlands in their opening game 2-0. It was a very frustrated match for the Turkish team that wasted many given opportunities to collect points from a Dutch team, which seemed to be rather vulnerable. However, Abdullah Avci’s men shown a lot of effectiveness, and with goals by Emre Belözoğlu (Min.42), Umut Bulut (Min.60) and Selçuk İnan (Min.75) defeated Estonia 3-0.

The Netherlands is disputing the first position of the group with the Romanian team, which has shown a surprisingly outstanding performance. On the other hand, Turkey and Hungary are fighting for the third place with three points each. Andorra and Estonia have shown a very mediocre performance and have been weakest teams of the group with 0 points.

This match between Hungary and Turkey will take place in the magnificent Ferenc Puskás Stadion in Budapest. The stadium, which is a remarkable landmark of the city, is a multi-functional location mainly used for important sports events and concerts. Built between 1948 and 1953, Ferenc Puskás Stadion has hosted some of the most famous artists in the world including: Queen, Rolling Stones, Metallica and Madonna among many others. Formerly called Népstadion (people’s Statadium), the stadium will be demolished and replaced by the New Puskás Ferenc stadion, which expected to be finished by 2015.

If you are planning to come with family and friends to the game, it is advisable to buy the tickets online in advance. To get to the stadium, take the line M2 of the metro and get off at the Ferenc Puskás Stadion station. You can also get there by tram 1 or 1A or by bus. If you are one of those who enjoy a beer before heading to the game, you should grab couple of pints in the city center, because in the surrounded area of the stadium you won’t find many places for pre-match beers.

If you are coming with children to the match, you want to come to the stadium early, because the entrance tend to be very crowed; believe me, you do not want to miss the beginning of the game.
