Monogamy is still popular, and the kids are allright….
In modern societies there is a tendency to believe that monogamy has ceased to exist, marriages end in divorce and, moreover, that the sexual debut for both men and women is earlier with each passing year. Now, new research has studied sexual behavior in different parts of the world, and proven that these “grass was greener” opinions are in fact opinions, not actually facts.
The study was conducted in 59 countries and is the first international investigation related to these issues. Its findings contradict popular opinion: the age of sexual initiation has not gone down in the last three decades and monogamy is still the majority choice across the globe.
The study, called “Sexual behavior in different contexts: a global perspective,” was conducted by the School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and published in the prestigious medical journal The Lancet. The study also revealed that married people have more sex than those who are single.
The survey also confirmed that sex-related behaviors vary greatly among different countries and regions, but that there are also universal trends. One is that premarital sex is increasingly common everywhere. Why? The explanation given by the experts is that people marry much later than they used to, but their sexual debut has remained more or less constant. Moreover although monogamy is common, having more than one partner during ones life is also common.
