A typical Hungarian breakfast

Everyone should start the day with a hearty and delicious breakfast, however not everyone have the time and inspiration to cook in the morning. In this case, a typical Hungarian breakfast is the answer. Grab some fresh bread and meat, chop some vegetables, make toast and put creamy things on it. It is all up to you. You’ll see how Budapest is even more beautiful when you enjoy it in the morning with a full stomach.

Májkrém (which literally mean cream liver) goes very well with both, fresh bread and toast. Spicy cream is one of the most common ingredients of the Hungarian sandwich, which is a very popular snack in Budapest.

It is important to note that májkrém is not the same as the famous and expensive Hungarian libamáj (goose liver), which is also an exquisite culinary adventure.

Salami is one of the most famous dishes in Hungary. It is normally produced with spices, smoked and cured. It has a very unique flavor.

Cold meat is also very popular when you want to eat something quick and simple. It can be boiled, fresh, dried or smoked. You can eat it in sandwiches or as a side dish.

You can also have Túró for breakfast (Hungarian quark or cottage cheese), which is a very important ingredient for sandwiches and salads, but it can also be used for making cheesecake or pancakes. There is a kind of special Túró with chopped onion, peppers, tomatoes and paprika called kőrözött.

If you find some eggplants in your kitchen, you can easily make an eggplant cream. Just roast the eggplant, and boil the soft parts.

There is also Greavel cream in Hungary. Greavel is basically animal fat that they eat very often with breakfast, but sometimes, when they get tired of chewing, they make salty cream gravel. After eating that it is advisable to do some jogging.

Hurka is a special type of boiled sausage. There are two types: one made of liver, rice (Majas hurka) and another made with cooked blood, dry rice, salt, pepper and spices (Veres hurka).

However, the most popular breakfast in Budapest is the villásreggeli (literally breakfast with fork), it contains scrambled eggs and omelets, which are very popular as the first meal of the day. Villásreggeli is mainly served with some spices, as Hungarian paprika, as well as vegetables including onions.

Another food that many Hungarians love eating in their sandwiches is the cow tongue. The good thing is that it doesn’t look like a tongue at all after cutting, seasoning and cooking it.

Disznósajt (brawn) is made with gelatin, slices of meat of different origins, spices and other things we do not want to know.

Or you can make deviled eggs in just 10 minutes, sprinkle with paprika and serve with toasted bread, sliced onion, mustard and, in case you have, a slice of fried chicken breast from the previous day.

The crepes are also a good option if you want to start the day with something sweet. But have in mind that Hungarians make very thin pancakes stuffed with a thick Hungarian jam and dark chocolate sauce and are served rolled.
